Abdullah Alqarni is a PhD Student at the University of Nottingham, and a BALR Travel Award winner for the BTS Winter Meeting 2018. He gave an oral presentation his abstract "S55: Effect of electronic cigarette extraction on vasoactive gene expression in human pulmonary artery smooth muscle and endothelial cells" on Thursday 6th December 2018 in the session "Tobacco dependence and vaping" and has kindly shared his experience of the BTS with us.
"I have been conducting my PhD in Respiratory Medicine since April 2016 at Nottingham Respiratory Research Unit on the City Hospital. I have been focusing on studying the role of cigarette smoke, e-cigarette, and hypoxia in the development of pulmonary hypertension.
I have submitted an abstract as part of my study so far entitled “Effect of electronic cigarette extraction on vasoactive gene expression in human pulmonary artery smooth muscle and endothelial cells” to the British Thoracic Society Winter Meeting 2018. I am very pleased that abstract has been accepted as a spoken presentation in the Tobacco dependence and vaping session.
British Association for Lung Research helped me to attend and present at British Thoracic Society Winter Meeting 2018 by offering me one of their travel grants. It was the first time I presented my PhD work as an oral presentation to the wider research community. I have benefited enormously from attending and presenting at this congress for my current study and future career development."
